Hospital Dentistry Division
The Hospital Dentistry Division
offers specialist services at the Halmstad Hospital in Halmstad, and
at the
Hospital in Varberg, situated 80 km north of Halmstad. It treats patients with special needs, following referrals, from the two hospitals, and from general medical
and dental practitioners.
Oral treatment is focused on those medically
compromised adult patients who require elimination of oral infection,
prophylaxis and follow-up because of
haematological malignancy with chemotharapy and/or bone marrow
transplantation, organ transplantation, malignancy in head and
neck with radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy, endocarditis and sinusitis.
Patients with dental treatment phobia, mental retardation or
motor handicap, snoring and sleep apnoea, and diseases of the oral mucosa are also taken care of, and salivary dysfunction
(Sjögren’s Syndrome) is analysed.
Inpatients, receiving medical care are treated, if they have acute dental treatment need or are under medical rehabilitation (i.e. anorexia, stroke).
The staff provides education to nursing personnel at the two hospitals, and to students during nursing education, and the dental hygienists in the unit have a regular consulting role in the medical wards.
